One in Ten

A very interesting news from iMerlion:

According to calculations, one in 10 people in Singapore have an iOS device, making Singapore the country with the highest penetration in the world.

Also from that article, iOS devices breakdown:

  • 402,922 iPhones
  • 76,575 iPod Touches
  • 1,453 iPads

Remember when it was weird to walk while poking your phone? Yeah, me neither.

Tips if you have problems downloading iPhone SDK

2. After logging in, the link is http://developer.apple.com/iphone/index.action
3. Replace http with https in the address bar so it reads https://developer.apple.com/iphone/index.action
4. Click the SDK link when the page is being served from the https server

That worked like a charm.

Maybe it's a good time to download a medical app

Woolley used the light from his iPhone to show him his injuries and diagnosed it properly as a broken foot. Then, he used the instructions from the app to treat the excessive bleeding from cuts on his legs and the back of his head.

[...]

Woolley also used his camera to take pictures of the surrounding rubble to piece together a way out.

Any recommendations?

iPhone Pink Sensors

There are 4 sensors on your phone (picture examples are below) - 2 that you can't get to while opening, and the other 2 that you can see. The first one is in the small round hole on top left of the phone (the earpiece hole), and the other one is in the bottom middle that separates the connector. If you shine a light and look at either of these, the sensor will be pink if water has touched this area. Because of this pink sensor, the folks at the Apple store will not honor your warranty

In case you are not aware of these sensors, and planning to get an AppleCare for iPhone / claim warranty / buy used iPhone. Pink sensor = no warranty = you're screwed!

But, I heard there are some tricks to un-pink them.

SingTel offers marketing support to iPhone developers

under the agreement with SingTel, the developer gets 40 percent of sales unless revenue breaks $10,000. After that, the percentage becomes smaller.

Interesting move from SingTel. Makes me wonder, is that one country sales or worldwide sales?

V-MODA Vibe II

I was looking for a good earphones with microphone for my iPhone. I use earphones almost everyday, so I might as well get a good one. After reading a lot of reviews and forums on the web, I ordered this earphones around last week. Some reviews I read on the net say it's good. I actually spent one day on weekend, tried to search for it in stores in Singapore, but no luck. Then I decided to order directly from their web store, since they provide (quite) cheap international shipping. After I placed my order, they sent the tracking id, so I can track the package from UPS site.

Fast forward about one week, the package arrived, in a small box.
The packaging box

Whoa, so big for earphones? I opened it to find out that the box filled with some foam thingy, and found the earphones box inside.

More info in the back

Packaging-wise, this thing looks awesome from outside, but when you try to open it, you'll find a lot of difficulties in your way. I realized that I don't have a pair of scissors nearby, so I cut things with nail clipper. Haha.. So, here are what I got inside the box:
The earphone plug, with "Rock Safely" warning

A lot of silicone caps, carrying case. VIP card, a pair of earhooks

How about sound quality? Well, I don't know. It's my first in-ear earphone. I usually use the standard iPod or iPhone earphones, and it's quite different. I can only say, for music, the sound is good compared to standard iPhone earphones. It blocks noise from outside. I have to pause the music to slightly hear the announcement on train. I cannot hear the engine sound of buses, which is quite loud. But for making calls, I prefer the old standard earphones that comes with the iPhone. It feels different when making calls, because with this earphone, you can feel your voice and it feels weird.

Anyway, that's my first experience with international purchase and delivery. Very good and pretty convenient.
